If you’re a solo traveler or an intrepid couple that’s looking for a convenient and affordable way to explore the country, then a truck camper may be just the ticket. For those of you who already own a suitable pickup truck, attaching on a truck camper is a relatively easy and low-cost option to ensure that you have comfortable accommodations everywhere you go.

However, truck campers are not known for their spaciousness, which means you’ll have to consolidate and find more clever storage answers than you would in a larger RV or in your home.

The Outpost RV, located in Middlebury, is your Indiana truck camper dealer. As such, we’ve created a quick list of tips to help you make the most of the limited space in your truck camper while you travel.

Invest in Laundry Baskets

The bed of a truck camper is often installed over the driving cab, which gets it out of the way of the main floor of the camper. And you don’t use your bed during the day, generally speaking, so why not make it a temporary closet? Place each traveler’s clothing in a separate plastic laundry basket, the type you can find for a few dollars at most big-box stores, and stash these up top on the bed while you’re going about your day. Move them down at night to sleep. You can even stack empty baskets underneath those you’ve filled so that you have extra baskets for taking dirty laundry to the laundromat.

Create a Capsule Wardrobe

You may have read in fashion magazines about capsule wardrobes, and you might wonder what they have to do with camping. It’s a term used for a small collection of staple garments that you can mix and match with each other, which cuts down on the number of items you bring while maximizing the number of outfits you can create from them.

For example, a few T-shirts, a long-sleeved shirt and a sweater packed with a pair of jeans, a pair of shorts and a skirt, along with two pairs of shoes, can be combined into several different outfits depending on the day and the weather. It’s an easy way to take less clothing along for your trip, and you can stop at a laundromat to wash everything once a week or so.

Add a Rooftop Cargo Box

Another place you can find some extra storage is on the roof of your truck camper! For items you need to bring along on your trip, but don’t need to use very often, invest in a rooftop cargo box. It can be a pain to get things out of it when you need them, which is why you shouldn’t use it for daily necessities. Be aware that this will add some weight to your camper, so you won’t want to stash heavy items in it.

Stash Toiletries in a Travel Bag

Just like you give each person their own laundry basket for clothes, you’ll want everyone to have their own travel bag for toiletries. In a small wet bath, like you’ll find on a truck camper, you won’t have much room for toiletries like shampoo and body wash. And if your truck camper doesn’t have a shower, then you’ll need to use campground shower facilities anyway. So fill a travel bag with each person’s toiletries for easy transport and store them in a cabinet out of the way when they’re not needed.
