Pack Shelf-Stable Food
If you're going to be on the road for a while, your RV appliances might be without power for long stretches of time. If so, make sure any dairy products or raw meat are packed in a separate cooler with plenty of ice to keep them stable. You may even want to stock up on perishables once you've reached your destination. In the meantime, pack things like tuna, peanut butter, canned beans, etc., foods that can withstand temperature variation and generally won't spoil with on long trips.
Keep Your Food Contained
One of the most common issues RV'ers face is packing food for a road trip. Not just what foods to bring, but packing things just right so it doesn't shift and fall during transit. Try packing your foods in stackable containers that you can wedge together tightly to prevent items from falling. You can even buy cabinet bars to secure them closed and avoid unwanted spills while you're on the road. You may also want to invest in a few bungee cords, which you can use both inside and outside your fridge, to tie things down and keep them secure while you're driving. No one wants to clean a mess first thing after arriving at your destination.
Pack Lightweight Cups, Tableware and Silverware
No matter how well you prepare, some things are going to shift and move while you're driving, it's just the nature of the beast. But no one wants to deal with broken glasses or tableware while you're travelling. Consider packing lightweight and durable plastic (or maybe even paper) cups, plates, and flatware to prevent any on-the-road accidents. Additionally, this will save on time with cleanup, especially if you're travelling with children.
Cook Smart
When you're cooking in an RV, you're literally bringing your power or fuel source with you, in most cases propane. This means pasta, which means a good amount of water in a large pot, might not be the best idea, since heating all that water takes time and fuel. And if you're going somewhere warm, heating up the inside of your RV by boiling water might make everyone miserable. Quick foods that are easy to cook and take less time, like grilled cheese, sloppy joes, tacos, etc., might be the best way to go.
Try New Things
Vacationing in an RV is excellent excuse to try new cooking methods, especially if you're going to be camping! And we're not just talking about hotdogs and marshmallows. You can try your hand at dutch oven cooking, using foil packet meals (that you put together yourself), open flame vegetable kabobs, there are even coffee makers that you can put right on your campfire! This turns mealtime into the perfect way to spend an evening with family and friends, relaxing next the fire while you're waiting for your food to cook.
Remember, pack non-perishable foods, bring either disposable or durable plastic flatware, and plan your meals ahead of time so you don't run out of propane.
