There’s nothing like an RV to elevate a camping trip into a camping experience, but these valuable machines can also inspire theft. Whether you’re just off on a hike or on an errand, your RV will occasionally be unsupervised, and we here at The Outpost RV want to make sure it stays safe. For your peace of mind and your security, we’ve put together some tips for RV theft prevention. To learn more, or to see the RVs we have for sale, contact our store in Middlebury, Indiana, today!

The Right Spot

Just picking the right parking spot can do a lot to improve your RV’s security. At your campsite, try to park the RV far away from any roads to increase the work potential thieves need to do. But try not to go too far away from all the other campers—there’s safety in numbers, and in more potential witnesses.

For towable RVs, park it so it’s more time-consuming or difficult to hook it up to a vehicle that could drive off with it.

When parking at home, try to pick an enclosed, secure area like a barn or garage. If that’s not an option, make sure the RV is on your property, not the street.

Secure The RV

In general, you’ll want to make sure all windows and doors are locked tight any time you don’t need them open. That means any time you leave, any time you’re outside for a long period of time, etc. A security system is also valuable, though expensive.

You should also consider a hitch lock for towable RVs, which prevents someone from hitching up your trailer without the key.

Other Belongings: Minimize Temptation

Aside from the RV itself, the items and supplies you bring along are potential targets for thieves. Just like a car parked in a large lot for a long period of time, it’s best to bring any real valuables with you when you leave your RV alone. If that’s not an option, make sure they’re out of sight from outsiders. That means jewelry, electronics, and other valuables.

Put them in drawers or cabinets, draw your curtains and blinds, and so on. For especially valuable or dangerous items, such as ownership documents or firearms, consider getting a safe to add a layer of security.

Other Tips

If your trailer or other items do end up missing, you’ll want a way to locate them. There are various tracking devices you can connect to a smartphone to help you locate missing items, and local law enforcement can assist in their recovery. Personalizing items to prove they’re yours can also help.
